Following Memorial Day the team here at Ocala Golf Course began aerating the short grass throughout the course including tees, fairways, greens and green surrounds. It is a lengthy process but critical in maintaining and enhancing the long-term health of our grass. Among the many benefits achieved through aeration are:
- Alleviate compacted soils
- Increase air exchange and water percolation
- Removal of organic material which hosts plant pathogens and turf injuring insects
Plans are to aerate the rough throughout the summer; if you find your ball within a recently aerated portion, kindly consider it ground under repair and take relief.
Initiatives moving forward are to:
- Grow in or re-sod worn areas in fairways and around the greens
- Suppress weed populations throughout the course
The good news is those pesky little holes created by aerification will be recovered by mid-June.
