What WLGO Means to Me

On Monday, August 11th, the World’s Largest Golf Outing benefiting Wounded Warrior Project will be held across 110+ courses in over 28 states.  We are part of that Ocala and it’s something to be proud of!  Now is the time to sign up your team or donate to a team or the course.

The first WLGO was played in 2011 and it has continued to grow ever since.  Last year 10,499 participants helped to raise $735,440 and this year we’re shooting for $1,000,000.

How is that possible in one day, you might ask. Well, that is the coolest part of the event in my opinion.  Similar to a walkathon, once a team has signed up to play in the event, they can spread the word to friends, family and colleagues and ask for their support.  Each team has a webpage that allows additional donations to be made in support of their team.  You can add a team picture, fundraising goal and write about your inspiration.

My inspiration is my dad.  I am blessed to have a supportive, amazing father who also shared with me his love of golf as I was growing up.  While he didn’t talk much about his time in the Vietnam War, I remember a time when I was young that my dad spoke about surviving his near-fatal wounds received during an attack where three of his fellow soldiers were killed.  Dad made a statement that day that has stuck with me my entire life.  He said he believed God helped him survive so that his kids could be born into the world.   He received a Purple Heart for his wounds and he is a hero in every sense of the word.  Last year when I first learned about the World’s Largest Golf Outing I immediately thought about my dad and I couldn’t wait to get involved.

In our first year as a WLGO participating club, Ocala Golf Club had 76 players who helped us raise almost $2,500 locally in 2013.  It was a special day to honor and help WWP and what they do to assist the injured service men and women of our country.

This year, I think we can double last year’s contribution and that we can raise at least $5,000 in Ocala.  It’s not about your golfing ability or score, it’s about having a fun day of golf while supporting the cause.  We need your help Ocala, let’s come together to celebrate our freedom and those who have sacrificed to help make it possible.  To find out more on the specifics of our event or to sign up, please visit http://www.worldslargestgolfouting.com/course/ocala-golf-club.
